I’m here to help you decide which slicing guide and width to buy. Here are some things to keep in mind:
1. All my slicing guides are designed to slice your loaf using the same method whether slicing horizontally or vertically. Insert the bread knife into the knife slot, and slice it to your desired thickness.
2. When slicing round loaves horizontally, make sure to cut them in half. Place the cut face down on the guide and slice it. So, it’s not the diameter of the loaf that matters, but the height. For example, an 8-inch round loaf that’s 5 1/2 inches tall can be sliced using any of the 5 1/2-inch wide guides. If your round loaf is over 8 inches in diameter, don’t buy the style guide with the boxed-in end. Instead, get the open style MINI OR MAXI. Then, you can slice any diameter round loaf easily, as long as the height of the loaf doesn’t exceed the width of the guides.
Loaves up to 7-inches wide can be sliced horizontally or vertically using this combination guide. It helps you slice perfect 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 7/8 and 1 1/8-inch bread slices using the horizontal or vertical method. These thicknesses are close to approximate slice thickness due to the fact different breads slice differently.
To keep the guide from sliding on the counter, silicone tabs are on all eight corners of the guide. I also include a silicon pad to place under the vertical guide base when slicing vertically to eliminate the guide from moving around.
I handcraft all my bread slicing guides in Lincolnton, Georgia. This guide is made from solid 3/4-inch oak lumber for the side rails and 1/2-inch veneer for the bread table. The base used for vertical slicing is solid oak.
My goal was to make it easy to use, affordable, durable, easily stored, and most of all slice straight slices of bread every time.
The guide comes apart from the vertical position by removing two screws using a Philips head screw driver for easy and compact storage as shown in the photographs.
Videos are available showing the guide in action on YouTube. Search for “Mystery Lathe.”
Here are a few tips for using my bread slicing guide:
I’ve sold hundreds of my horizontal slicing guides across the USA, and 99% of the people who use them are very happy. After selling over 2,000 of my various style horizontal and vertical slicing guides, I’ve found that if you have trouble slicing bread with your hands, I recommend a vertical guide. It takes more skill to slice horizontally than vertically. But if you have good hand-eye coordination, horizontal slicing is the fastest and easiest way to slice perfect slices of bread. Don’t forget that if you’re not satisfied with your guide, you can return it for a full refund within 30 days of purchase. The old saying “Practice makes perfect” applies to learning how to use this guide.
IMPORTANT: A bread knife with a blade length of at least 12 inches is recommended for slicing. A 10-inch knife can work.....but you may find it difficult and frustrating to keep the tip of the blade in the guides knife slot as you move the knife back and forth while slicing. The knife isn’t included with the order.
Just a friendly reminder to keep your guide out of water or the dishwasher. If it gets a little dirty, just wipe it off with a dry or damp cloth.
Now, I know you’re curious about cutting yourself on the guide, but please be careful. The knife is sharp. It can cut bread and you too. It’s best to keep it out of reach of children. If you’re worried about getting hurt, don’t use the guide. Just return it for a full refund. I want you to be totally safe and satisfied.
If you have any questions, issues, or problems with your guide, feel free to give me a call or text at 315-868-3453 or email me at “mysterylathe@gmail.com”. I’m here to help you out. Don’t be surprised when I just say hello upon answering. This is my personal cell phone, and I’m 78 years old. This is my hobby, not a money-making business.
By the way, the guide is finished with food-safe mineral oil. From time to time a new coat may be applied to refresh the woods beauty. You can also use butcher block oil available at most any hardware store.
Here are the approximate dimensions:
