My Story

Selling Bread Slicing Guides and I call the company "Mystery Lathe"? That's a "Mystery Story" in its self.

Why would a website that sells bread slicing guides be named “Mystery Lathe”??

Well, buckle up, because I’m about to take you on a wild ride through my life story.

Back in 1964, I was a high school student living in upstate New York growing up on a dairy farm. I decided to take a wood shop class, and that’s when my love for wood lathe turning began. I was hooked! After graduating, I went to Oswego State University to become an industrial arts teacher.

After a few years teaching in upstate New York, I moved my family to Pennsylvania. I wanted to try something new, so I explored a different career option.

Then, in 2003, I decided to make another career change. I went back to upstate New York and ended up working at my old school district. It was like stepping back in time! While I was there, I found out that the school was selling the old wood lathe I had used all those years ago. I couldn’t resist buying it. I wanted to get it up and running in my retirement years.

I retired in 2013 and decided to move south to a warmer climate. Florida was my first choice, but…

“By some mystery”… my wood lathe and I ended up in Lincolnton, Georgia. My property is surrounded by beautiful woods full of cedar trees. I was surrounded by cedar wood everywhere I looked! I decided to get the 50-year-old wood lathe running and turn some wood. It was a blast!

So, here’s the thing… I fell in love with this craft, and I couldn’t stop! I took these rough blocks of cedar and turned them into these magical bowls and plates on the lathe. Of course, nature has its own way of shaping these pieces, and they’re all different. Some are thick, some are thin, some have bug holes, some have cracks, and some even have decayed sections. But they’re all unique and beautiful in their own way.

In the end, it’s all thanks to the old "Mystery Lathe", the old cedar, and a little bit of my own magic. They come together to create some of the most beautiful wood creations you’ll ever see.

Five years ago, I embarked on an entrepreneurial journey by launching my Etsy online business, Mystery Lathe. My venture specialized in the creation of handcrafted wood turnings, meticulously crafted using a wood lathe. The name “Mystery Lathe” is a direct reference to the lathe itself.

Coincidentally, I also developed a bread slicing guide for personal use a few years ago. Surprisingly, this guide has since evolved into a thriving business, with sales exceeding a few thousand copies across the United States.

Check out what I’ve made now for you to enjoy with my bread slicing guides being sold thru "Mystery Lathe".

Thanks for letting me share my passion with you. It's all a big "Mystery".............
